5 Tips to Eating Out Healthier

As a college student, I found myself eating out at least once or twice a week. My mentality when I would go out to eat would be "I'm paying for this meal so might as well get what I really want" or "My friend is getting the mac n cheese and that sounds sooo good". It can be really hard to make mindful decisions when going out to eat with your friends. Now, it is true that you are spending money to eat at this restaurant so why not spend money on the right meal? I have a FIVE simple tips on choosing the healthier option when going out:
1. Substitute Your Side
Instead of those super greasy onion rings or beer battered french fries, ask you waiter to substitute your side for some veggies or a side salad. Many restaurants offer an option of a side salad or grilled veggies. Even if you think you're going to "only have one" french fry, its a good call to get the veggies instead. They are yummy, good for you and allow for some wiggle room for the rest of your meal.
2. Get Water or an Unsweetened Ice Tea
One of the most sneaky caloric parts of a meal is your beverage! Skip the soda, cocktail or even the juice. All of these contain lots and lots of sugar. You may think getting that orange juice is a healthy alternative, a glass of juice has almost as much sugar as a soda. Why drink your calories when you could eat them?!

3. Skip the Bun
This one is easier said in done because who does not love a good burger bun and all? But trying a burger or sandwich wrapped in lettuce is really good AND you'll feel better and lighter. Ask your server for your sandwich in a lettuce wrap instead. If you don't want to skip the bun or bread entirely, then just have one and you get the best of both worlds.
4. Ask for it your way
Most restaurants will accommodate for your preference. For example, if something is fried ask if it can be grilled instead. Maybe ask for no cheese or light cheese. If there is sauce on your tacos or sandwich, ask for the sauce on the side. You're not missing out, you get to chose how much you are having. Also ask for extra veggies!
5. Order an appetizer (or 2)
Restaurants tend to serve large portions that exceed the amount for one person. So why not try an appetizer? An appetizer is a good amount of food for a single person. You won't be tempted to finish your whole plate for 2 when you are already full. If you are worried about variety in your meal, get two appetizers!
HAPPY EATING xoxo
